The
EDBA deplores this form of training for a family companion/pet!
We hold
grave concerns about the level of community responsibility
displayed, when a commercial enterprise engaging in this
sort of training, resulting in an illegally trained dog,
gains free airing on a TV channel in prime time, and there
is no public move from RSPCA ,the other media or the government
to prevent it!
IMPORTANT
FACTS FOR ALL DOG OWNERS TO CONSIDER:
ILLEGALITY
An attack
trained dog must be declared as a dangerous dog under
current laws. This requires special ownership conditions.
This training actually encourages criminality-owners hide
what they have done--is
that a good example to others or the children?
DANGER
An attack
trained dog becomes a "time bomb" in other than very experienced
hands, due to a false sense of security. What happens
if the handler is not there and children are seen by the
dog as being attacked when in play? Or a person innocently
attempts to gain entry to a premises? To restrict a dog
in a pen will defeat the purpose of the training-- but
loose, it can become a dangerous weapon. The general public
does not have sufficient knowledge of dog behaviour to
recognize signs a dog thinks it should attack or defend
a situation!
Complacency
could mean a child at risk--no young child should be left
unsupervised with any dog, and this sort of training will
not negate that safety requirement.
In the
event of an attack, the OWNER will be legally liable,
but able to own another dog if desired, the DOG will be
destroyed for doing what it believed was expected of it,
the MEDIA will sensationalize the breed aspects because
the owner will not admit to illegal training--and a VICTIM
will be left suffering!
SPECIALITY
Attack
training in some form is part of Police and service work
and Schutzhund. Each is highly specialized training.
Police
dogs are trained with a handler who spends working hours
with the dog in specialized training and activity all
its working life.
The dogs
are specially selected and screened before any training
begins and it certainly continues for more than the 4
week course often advertised by these Commercial trainers!
Police dogs have natural instincts developed and utilized,
are well socialized ,so they can live in the handler's
family when not working or retired.
INAPPROPRIATENESS
Our experience
tells us that any dog socialized and obedient in a loving
family would defend them in a genuine threat of danger.
There is no reason to undertake an illegal form of training!
The guard breeds seem to have an inbuilt deterrent appearance.
Most of us would back off if a Rottweiler looked at us
challengingly! Canine specialists
and organizations do NOT recommend bite training or attack
training. They promote training which is appropriate for
the individual dog and owner at their own pace. Even though
the goals aimed at may be identical for all dogs, no one
method suits all dogs or all situations. What does suit
is the gentle encouragement over time for a dog to socialize
with other dogs and people outside the family and learn
through enjoyment to obey and be a reliable canine citizen
under many normal situations. This applies to all training
aspects, e.g. toilet and lead training, just ask other
owners!
ALTERNATIVES
There are
many sources of information on gentle obedience
training, and assistance in applying this- EDBA will outline
the best aspects of these.
